American Airlines Cuts 3 Europe Nonstops, Trims Mexico Flights for Holidays

By Sophie Chen •

Europe Route Cuts

Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows American eliminated flights to Rome and Dublin from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). Miami (MIA) also lost a route. These cuts extend into January 2027. Travelers seeking Rome or Dublin nonstops must now fly from Philadelphia (PHL). Paris flights continue from JFK, PHL, and DFW, while MIA is off the map for the French capital.

Mexico Capacity Reductions

American significantly reduced capacity to Mexico. Seats dropped nearly 92% in December versus last year. The Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) to Los Cabos (SJD) route saw the largest decline among active routes. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) flights to Monterrey and Tijuana were fully eliminated. Cancún and Mexico City flights saw seat drops of 38.5% and 46.6% respectively.

New Routes and Capacity Increases

American also expanded capacity on existing routes. The Charlotte Douglas (CLT) to Mexico City (MEX) route doubled its seat capacity. The DFW to Queretaro (QRO) route added 20% more seats. Three new Europe routes launched: PHL to Edinburgh (EDI), JFK to Barcelona (BCN), and MIA to Milan Malpensa (MXP). Some of these new routes are not available in January 2027.

Market Context

Total US-Europe seat capacity fell slightly, down less than 1%. American cut over 3% of its US-Europe seats. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines increased capacity by 0.7% and 3.8% respectively. Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic reduced seats by 10% and 9.1%. American plans to increase Europe seats by 2% in January 2027. More seats will be available for Caribbean and Canada flights this December.
