Cuthbert Ncube, Tourism Visionary, Passes Away; Africa Loses Key Leader

By James Walker •

Cuthbert Ncube a murit: Africa a pierdut un visionar al turismului; e TurboNews a pierdut un membru al familiei noastre

Cuthbert was more than a tourism leader we reported on. He was part of our extended family. For e TurboNews, this is a profound personal loss. We began working with the African Tourism Board in 2018. This was an e TurboNews market initiative. Its goal was to boost Africa's global tourism visibility. What started as a friends' idea grew significantly under Cuthbert's leadership. He transformed the initial vision into a continental tourism body. This organization aims to unite Africa through tourism and cooperation. Cuthbert possessed an exceptional passion for Africa. His charisma, optimism, and determination inspired many.

We celebrate his life and shared journey. Cuthbert Ncube's history is inseparable from the African Tourism Board's story. This story is closely linked to e TurboNews. In 2018, we launched the initiative to promote Africa. Africa held extraordinary tourism potential. However, its global visibility did not match this potential. Individual countries promoted themselves with limited resources. The idea of presenting Africa collectively remained unfulfilled. e TurboNews already had a network of tourism professionals. This included government leaders and industry supporters. Initial directors included Dr. Taleb Rifai, Alain St. Ange, Dr. Walter Mzembi, Moses Vilakati, and Dr. Peter Tarlow. These diverse experts agreed on Africa's immense potential. Our original aim was to boost international visibility for African destinations. We had media reach and enthusiasm. Cuthbert saw something more important.

Cuthbert Ncube did not simply manage the African Tourism Board

Cuthbert Ncube did not simply manage the African Tourism Board. He saw beyond a mere market initiative. His vision was a major, African-led tourism organization. This ambition surpassed simple international promotion. Where we saw a market platform, he saw continental tourism bureaucracy. He understood Africa needed more than promotion. It needed cooperation. It required links between governments, businesses, and communities. Crucially, Africans needed ownership of their voice. Cuthbert embraced this challenge. He drove the Board toward a broader continental structure. Building this across 54 diverse nations was immense. Difficulties and differing views arose. Yet, Cuthbert was committed to his mission and to Africa. He dared to dream beyond the initial project scope.

His career predated the African Tourism Board. He built his career as an intrapreneur in South Africa. He managed Kwela Fleet Management in Pretoria. He also developed hospitality ventures like Golden Feathers in Cape Town. This experience gave him a practical, entrepreneurial view of tourism. His international career began in 2013. He became Vice-President Regional for Africa at UNWTO. He was re-appointed in 2015 and again in 2017. This exposed him to international tourism diplomacy and global networks.
