Bath Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Tips, and Is It Worth Visiting?

Practical Details

The stalls are spread across the streets surrounding Bath Abbey. This means you stroll through one of England's most beautiful cities. Hold a cup of mulled wine in hand. When the lights come on, the atmosphere feels authentic. It has a Dickensian charm. The main drawback is the heavy crowds. If possible, choose a weekday early in the schedule. That is when we enjoyed the best experience.

The event runs for 18 days. It starts on Thursday, November 26, and ends on Sunday, December 13, 2026. Entry is free. No ticket is required. Opening hours vary by day. Monday to Wednesday: 10:00 to 19:00. Thursday to Saturday: 10:00 to 20:00. Sunday: 10:00 to 18:00.

Why Is It So Short?

The market is organized by Bath & North East Somerset Council. It covers the city center. The route starts on Abbeygate Street and heads up to Milsom Street. The council's planning page states that up to 210 stalls and commercial units will be present in 2026. The market has run since 2001. It was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. It returned annually from 2022.

The 18-day duration dates back to a 2017 decision. At that time, organizer Visit Bath proposed extending it to 25 days. They dropped the idea after a four-month consultation with residents. The executive director told the Bath Chronicle, In the end, we have to listen to the residents. The council now has permanent planning permission for up to 25 days per year. However, in September 2026, they stated they have no current plansto extend beyond the current 18 days. Given the intense crowding, I understand the residents' point of view.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Yes, it is our favorite in the UK, though we may be biased. The atmosphere is created by the urban context. Stalls are integrated into the streets around the Abbey. Honey-colored Georgian stone facades form the backdrop for each kiosk. Bath is a city worth visiting in December even without the market. The event adds lights, mulled wine, and roasted nuts. My favorite spot is Abbey Green. It is a small paved square with a huge London plane tree. It is illuminated after dark. For my partner, Jess, who accompanied me annually, she valued the warmth and intimacy more.

The main shortcoming remains the crowds. Visit Bath reports approximately 440,000 visitors annually. On a Saturday afternoon, the narrow streets slow to a crawl. If you can only come on a weekend, arrive early or consider skipping the event. If you can visit mid-week, the experience is much more pleasant.

In 2024, Which? magazine ranked Bath first in its list of nine UK Christmas markets. This was based on a survey of British cities. The market's official website also carries a badge. It reads „Best UK Christmas Market 2024.”This was awarded by European Best Destinations. This travel site ranks markets based on public voting.
