Uniting Parliamentarians for the Future of Cruise

In a landmark move, more than 20 MPs and members of the House of Lords have united to form this dedicated group. The initiative covers vital topics including professional skills development, decarbonization, sustainable tourism, and regional growth across British coastal communities.

Darren Paffey, the elected representative for Southampton Itchen, has been appointed as Chair of the new group. Joining him in leadership are Vice-Chairs Lord Davies of Gower, a former maritime minister, and Llinos Medi, representing Ynys Môn.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Darren Paffey highlighted the importance of the sector. He noted that the forum brings lawmakers and industry stakeholders together to build on current successes and tackle future challenges. Paffey emphasized that cruise operations support thousands of jobs and businesses, with Southampton serving as the primary hub for multiple international cruise lines.

Economic Impact and Strategic Priorities

As the first parliamentary group focused exclusively on cruises, the association will highlight the industry's massive economic footprint. Official figures demonstrate that cruise vessels visit more than 50 ports and destinations nationwide, collectively sustaining over 69,000 jobs throughout the UK.

The group will serve as a vital bridge between lawmakers, industry leaders, and maritime experts. It will also provide a structured platform for consultations with government ministers and civil servants regarding sector-specific opportunities and regulatory hurdles. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) will operate as the official secretariat for the group.

Andy Harmer, Managing Director of CLIA UK, praised the initiative. He noted that the cruise sector sits at the intersection of maritime and visitor economies, offering immense potential to accelerate government growth targets. Building upon the Cruise Growth Plan released last year, the new forum will address crucial priorities such as environmental sustainability, destination management, and skills training to ensure long-term prosperity.
